Julie Moon is a Korean Canadian artist based in Toronto, Canada. For over twenty-five years, they have developed a practice rooted in clay—a material inherently accessible and familiar, with democratic reach across cultures.
Moon's work has been exhibited at notable venues including the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Art Gallery of Burlington, Cooper Cole Gallery, Patel Brown, and the Harbourfront Centre. They have participated in numerous artist residencies including, The Clay Studio of Philadelphia, Annandale Artist Residency, Archie Bray Foundation, and Center for Ceramics Berlin, with an upcoming residency at MenLo in Jingdezhen, China. Their practice has been supported by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council.
Moon's creative foundation began with studies in fashion design and fibre arts before earning a BFA from OCADU in 2005 and an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2010. This background in textiles informs their approach to sculptural surface and structure, manifesting in their interest in pattern, weaving structures, and the grid.
As an educator at OCADU, the Toronto School of Art, and in their downtown studio in downtown Toronto, Moon has fostered creative experiences and mentored emerging artists. Their practice exists at the intersection of independent studio work, collaborative projects, and community engagement—demonstrated through instruction and commissions.
